Our Own Words 2026, led by survivors Saskia Lightburn-Ritchie (MyCWA / Domestic Abuse Experts) and Samantha Billingham (SODA / Stronger Beginnings), represented a fundamental shift in how domestic abuse research is conducted. With over 1,100 respondents we now have a population level data set designed, led, analysed and reported on entirely by survivors.
It takes strength and courage to speak out, to share your story to tell someone what is happening to you behind closed doors. Fear, judgement, embarrassment and shame are so overwhelming, often stopping you from speaking out – even to those who are close to you.
In the midst of it, you don’t see or feel the coercive control, controlling behaviour or what is happening to you, it simply becomes normal behaviour, and you accept it.
Our Own Words is a powerful and empowering platform for any man or woman who has experienced domestic abuse to share their lived experience and get their voice heard in a confidential way.
There are so many people who want the opportunity to be heard but still there are many barriers preventing them from doing this; they can’t travel to roundtable events in London, they feel nervous and anxious being in a room full of professionals looking at them and judging them, they feel inferior, ashamed, embarrassed. The Our Own Words survey is anonymous and can be completed online, the computer screens a safety barrier.
This survey is unique in the fact that it’s people with lived experience have designed each question, from their perspective and not from the perspective of professionals.
When someone discloses abuse, you may be the first person they have ever confided in—and, depending on your response, you could also be the last.
If we are to create real change, we must hear real life stories from real people with real experiences, and the Our Own Words survey is the very platform for people to speak their truth to power.
Taking part in the Our Own Words survey is a powerful way for you to turn your personal experiences into a force for change. By sharing your story, you will be directly contributing to a vital body of evidence that will be presented to government and decisions-makers. Your unique perspective is invaluable, helping to shape policies and services that truly reflect the needs of those who have experienced abuse, ultimately crating a safer and more supportive future for everyone.
When I was in that situation, I would have loved to have taken part in this survey to get my voice heard.
Thank you so much to all those who have already taken part in this survey, we cannot do this work without you – we appreciate you.
Your voice, your story, is a powerful catalyst for change. By contributing to the Our Own Words survey, you’re not just sharing an experience; you are actively shaping a future where understanding leads to action, and where the echoes of your journey help build a safer, more supportive world for all survivors. This is your opportunity to ensure that your truth becomes a cornerstone of lasting change.
